Why I HAD to do the Whole30

When I found the Whole30, I had just suffered a serious bacterial infection that almost killed me. I spent 5 days in the hospital with sepsis and had massive amounts of antibiotics pumped into my veins. The sepsis caused a systemic inflammatory response in my body, triggering all the old joint pain in my hands, shoulders, elbows, and foot. I know my body well, and the flaring of my joints was not normal.

It was FAR from normal.Ness in hospital

The fact that I was almost taken out by bacteria also got me thinking about having a healthy immune system. Something had to change. I had to figure out how to feel better and prevent this from happening again.

I came across the audio book “It Starts with Food” and was fascinated by every word I heard. I listened to the book twice and took detailed notes the second time through. It was a lot to take in, but I wanted it all.

When I read about the anti-inflammatory and immune system healing effects from eating a certain way, I knew I had to try it, and I had give it my all. What did I have to lose? Testimonials of miraculous healing of chronic illnesses and effortless weight loss had me mesmerized.

This is what I wanted.

I decided that I would do a Whole45 instead of a Whole30 because the inflammation in my body was serious. It was going to take something drastic to relieve the pain I was in.

To give you a quick run down if you have no idea what I’m talking about… the Whole30 is a strict elimination diet that removes dairy, grains, legumes, and all added sugar from your diet for 30 days. Yes, this includes alcohol and artificial sweeteners. I love that it is a structured program that you can stick to for 30 days, no exceptions. The structure makes it easier in a way, because you don’t have to “think for your yourself” to make decisions, just follow the rules.

I couldn’t believe it, but I got my husband, Paul to agree to do it with me. It was something we both needed for our own reasons. January was the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and make some big changes. We were READY for 45 days of clean eating and feeling amazing. Spoiler alert: We didn’t make it to 45… but we made it to day 42, and I’m proud of that!

Paul and Ness woodsAfter completing a Whole42 and a two-week reintroduction period, my relationship with food is changed and my joint pain is almost gone.   I have gained such an appreciation for how food affects your mind and body. This is something I really believe in and I hope I can convince others to try it for themselves. I want to share with you what I loved and what I learned during my Whole30 experience. And this is only the beginning. I know that I have so much more to learn.
